What they promise, it was all lie
In 1943, recruiters came to a small village, looking for young girls and women.
The recruiters promised steady factory work in Japan, with food and lodging provided.
The applicants were mostly women, chosen regardless of age.
Most of them applied hoping to lift their families out of poverty.
But before long, they were packed into cramped trucks and taken away — traveling for hours by train and ship, without being told where or why.
When they finally arrived, hundreds of women had already been gathered there.
The promised factory was nowhere to be found. Instead, there were only tattered tents, makeshift barracks, and dim warehouses.
Soldiers cut off their hair and called them by Japanese names.
It soon became clear that this was no job offer at all, but an organized act of forced mobilization.

A Cold and Unkind Society
After the liberation in 1945, a few women managed with great difficulty to find their way back home.
But instead of the welcome they had hoped for, they were met with silence and rejection.
Some families denied what had happened to their daughters, while others tried to hide it altogether.
In many communities, the returning women were shunned,
even condemned as if they had sided with the perpetrators rather than been victims.
When they tried to speak, few were willing to listen.
Cut off from understanding and support, many fell into silence, carrying their pain alone.
Some tried to live quietly on what little they had earned in the comfort stations; others left their villages behind and wandered from place to place.
The stigma followed them for the rest of their lives — a wound that never truly healed.
